Water of Sorrow

There's a song for the water of sorrow
and a song for the fire of pain
a song for the love that you'll meet tomorrow
and one for the touch of skin
ah, life gives us songs to sing

Can you count how many times
you've held pleasure in your hands?
Open your fingers in the evening light
watch the water disappear in the sand

A breath is a wave you can drown in
it can whisper you out to sea
rock you up and down in its arms
like a mother sings her baby to sleep
ah, life is a song to sing

You know I sat there by her bedside
day after day after day
I held the line of the falling tide
but the water disappeared anyway

Three years I watched her dying
now it's four more 'til today
friends stop by and ask How are you doing?
but I still don't know what to say

The words are the first to be stolen
then the waves rock the breath to sea
her only goodbye a whisper in the light
of her eyes as it faded away
a life gives you songs to sing

There's a song for an ocean of sorrow
and a song for the fire of pain
a song for a love you might meet tomorrow
and one for the touch of skin.
