Then there was a little light, burned away what remained of the night
colored the fields – the clarity of air – my world, unveiled
then there was a sound, I turned around, there was someone coming my way…
there was, there was
there was, there was
Then there was a name came so lightly to the tongue
then there was a face couldn’t be erased when the day was done
then there was a touch – it doesn’t take much to bring you home
there was, there was
there was, there was
Some say that love’s a flower
plucked, put in a jar
keeps its beauty for an hour
but when the petals fall
and they always will
the hand that gave the flower’s still there
Then there was a name came so lightly to the tongue
then there was a face couldn’t be erased when the day was done
then there was a touch: make no mistake, it will take you home
there was, there was…
Then there was a time you traced the sun’s slow climb
then there was a space: you tried to read between the lines
then there was a sound, you turned around, there was someone calling you Home
there was, there was
there was, there was
there was, there was…

update
Two years ago, my aunt lost her husband Joel to cancer, after a long and hard passage which she and her two sons walked with integrity, love and incredible strength: helping his spirit depart, catching its deflated shell as it fell to the ground. She is remarrying this April, and we’ll join her to celebrate life and joy and hope.
She asked for contributions, and I offered this song, despite — or maybe because of — the lyric bridge, with its combination of shadow and light. I recorded this on my Mac to send her a demo… so I share it here:
